NUMBER BMWRAD1
Pentagon-shaped BMW radio removal tool (also called a pentagon or 5-sided wrench) special tool used for removing certain factory BMW car radios, particularly those with anti-theft features.
This tool has a unique pentagonal (5-sided) head instead of the more common hex (6-sided) or square shapes. It fits into special pentagon-shaped security screws or bolts on the radio unit. These screws are often found on the sides or front face of the radio/head unit in various BMW models, especially older ones with factory anti-theft radios (like Becker or Alpine units). Designed to prevent easy theft or unauthorized removal, where a standard screwdriver or Allen key won't fit properly.
Primarily for BMW models from the 1990s to early 2000s (e.g., E38/E39 7 Series for some newer versions, but also E36, E46 3 Series, E34 5 Series, and others depending on the radio type).
Used to loosen the security screws that hold the radio in the dash.
Note: Not all BMW radios use this—many E46-era or later units use standard DIN removal keys (wire U-shaped tools) instead, so check your specific model and radio.
DETAILS:
This pentagon tool (often just called the pentagon driver, pentagon wrench, or 5-sided radio tool) is a special tool designed specifically for removing certain factory BMW car radios, particularly the anti-theft or older stock head units in many classic models.
Note: It's not a standard Phillips, Flat head, Torx, or hex/Allen key—it's a pentagonal (5-sided) driver head, —Why it's needed? BMW used these tamper-resistant, 5-sided security screws (sometimes called "anti-theft" screws) on the radio mounting brackets or securing points. A regular screwdriver can sometimes work in a pinch (people often carefully use a small flathead or Phillips to "cam out" the screw without stripping it too badly), but the proper pentagon tool fits perfectly, reduces the risk of stripping, and makes removal much easier and safer. How it's typically used in BMW radio removal Access the screws — This usually involves first removing trim pieces, the climate control panel, ash tray, or center console parts (depending on the model—e.g., E39 5-Series or E46 3-Series might differ slightly). Locate the screws — There are often 2–4 of these special pentagon-head screws holding the radio in place (commonly behind the climate controls or on the sides). Use the tool — Insert the pentagon driver into the screw head and turn counterclockwise to loosen/remove them.
Pull the radio — Once loose, disconnect wiring harnesses and antenna, then slide the unit out. If you're working on a specific BMW model/year (like an E46, E90, or older E39), some newer vehicles use different methods (trim tools + Phillips screws, no pentagon needed). For older anti-theft radios, this tool is the go-to product.
