NUMBER H2587
High quality tool 2587 Made in Germany
This is the pin wrench needed to adjust the timing belt tension pulleys on VW/Audi 4 cylinder gas and diesel 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9 and 2.0 liter engines from approximately 1979 to 1997 and later, or earlier engines which have had the later style timing belt tension pulley installed.
The pins on this tool engage the offset center hub of the timing belt tension pulley,
allowing possibly a 15mm box end wrench to be placed on the pulley lock nut, and then rotation the offset center of the pulley upward in order to achieve proper timing belt tension. Remember, these pulleys adjust upward, not downward. Correct tension on a gasoline engines timing belt is achieved when the timing belt can just be twisted 1/4 turn (90 degrees) with moderate pressure using thumb and index finger. Tension is checked midway between the cam sprocket and intermediate shaft. Tension that is less than this will cause timing belt chatter. Tension greater than this will cause the timing belt to howl once it gets hot and could lead to premature timing belt failure. Correct tension for the diesel engines is checked and adjusted the same way, with the exception that the belt tension is checked midway between the cam sprocket and the injection pump sprocket and should only twist 1/8 of a turn (45 degrees) using the finger/thumb twist method previously described. Additionally, when doing a timing belt on the diesel engines, the cam locking tool is required, and the cam sprocket must be loose, allowing the cam to be locked at TDC, and then the crank, injection pump, and cam sprocket are then rotated independently from the cam in order to achieve TDC for both the crank and injection pump. Some manuals call this 2587 and other manuals may have it listed as number V159 (either number is correct).
